Re: Messa di Gloria by Puccini - Ricordi vocal score

Actually, I think we need to give more thought to the fact that the messa was first published in 195x. Assuming it was never published before (as the preface to my copy of the messa suggests), that edition might be an "editio princeps", which gives the publisher 70 years of protection from...

Re: finding ridiculously difficult dates

@icactus: Great job! @coulonnus: In how far does that help finding the birth/death dates of Charles F Hammond? None of the google results provide any date, except that he was alive in 1906 and 1911. Did he die before/after 1923, before/after 1940, before/after 1960? When exactly did he die? Those ar...

The homepage of Schott Music lists the death date of Josef Schmalnauer as October 30th, 1973

Re: Copyright on scores retyped in Sibelius/Finale

Generally, if the Brahms work is in the form it was originally written in (as opposed to an arrangement, like a new orchestration of a piano piece), your new typeset should be fine. The copyright of the new score (in countries where such a new score qualifies for the limited protection given to typ...

Re: Extent of the Urtext rule

I can't see how anyone could argue that continuo realizations aren't original enough, unless it's merely block chords. The Austrian AKM (www.akm.or.at), the Austrian equivalent to the German GEMA or the French SAGEM, apparently takes the stance that continuo realizations (and even vocal scores!) do...

Re: Bulk Downloading Option?

Why would you need ALL scores of a composer? If you want to do some real work (i.e. perform something, or look for a fitting piece for some occasion), I can't imagine a situation where you would need all scores of a composer. On the other hand, if you simply want a collection of as many scores on yo...

category walker to find score for particular instrumentation

While the new categorization project and the category walker is a good idea in principle, I'm fighting with it to find scores for a particular instrumentation. In particular, I'm looking for scores featuring string trio (preferrably Violin, Viola and Cello; but 2Violins and Cello would also be fine)...

Re: Life time data

The composer page contains the entry fl. 1717 - fl. 1733 for his life dates. After some research I know, what this means. But has everybody the right interpretation of this dates? I doubt that all users of IMSLP understand what fl. means. Even I didn't know about it until the recent thread here in ...

Re: Second modern edition of old non-copyright composition .

I agree with Carolus here. I only know the situation in Germany and Austria: In Germany, publication (basically, printing) is required to trigger the copyright durations. The Berliner Singakademie lost a court case a while ago, where the finding was that a piece was published during the lifetime of ...

Re: Typesets of more recent scores

A performance in the composer's lifetime would probably not serve to exempt the work from the 50 year rule, though multiple performances with collection of performance fees by a performing rights society might. Also, the fact that it was published in 1993 - the year his work entered public domain i...

Re: Where to submit errata?

Since the score is a scan, the error is already in the printed edition, so it's not the scanners/uploaders task to correct it. Rather, it should be documented on the "discussion" page of the score, so people can see that there is an error in the printed score already.

Re: Can anybody help me to find this book?

Hi I know maybe this isn't the right place for a question of this kind, but I'm looking for a book which my piano teacher has recommended to me and I can't find it except on Amazon.com. The book I'm looking for is "Famous Pianists & Their Technique" by Reginald Gerig. So, you have fou...

Re: Mass Length

Some of those overlong masses are not really intended for ordinary church service. Special services, like the ordination of a bishop, the coronation of a new king or emperor, or the ordination of a church typically take longer than one hour, and the music for such occasions typically is also far mor...
