Re: Major items dropped from PD-US server, I see

All of Sorabji's scores are under copyright and will remain so in most territories until 1 January 2069, with the exception of a small number of early works in US only because they happen to have been published between 1921 and 1931. Those publications all contain errors - some of them many errors -...

Re: Opus clavicembalisticum, KSS 50 (Sorabji, Kaikhosru Shapurji)

Thanks for this! For the record, we have never imposed any restrictions on the live public performance of Sorabji's music (as distinct from the uploading of it to online facilities); very occasionally, we have been asked for official permission for such live performances and, when confirming it, hav...

Re: SORABJI RETURNS!!!

For the record, Around Music was indeed issued late in the 1970s without the author's permission or knowledge and two of its pages are in reverse order; the index as originally published in 1932 was simply reprinted in this and is incomplete and full of errors. Also, for the record, the copies issue...

Re: Opus clavicembalisticum, KSS 50 (Sorabji, Kaikhosru Shapurji)

Although we have been in correspondence these past few days I have only just seen your helpful and detailed posts above. US copyright law differs from that of most countries in a number of particulars and are considerably more complex than those in many other territotires, so you thorough explanatio...

Victory? Hardly! I was not aware that there was a war on over this matter in any case. Be the veracity of all of the assertions various as they may - and the issue as to whether or not Sorabji's copyright on his early publications was renewed is one into which I will look in due course - the fact re...

Re: Last Sorabji piece of the year

Apologies. Please ignore previous response as it contains errors and I seem unable to delete it; what follows is the corrected version. This is the last Sorabji piece published 1926 or earlier that still needs to go up: Trois Poemes, KSS 21. https://www.worldcat.org/title/trois-poemes-pour-chant-et-...

Re: NAFTA negotiations could lead to stricter copyright rules in Canada

Well we got some unfortunate bad news (its not all bad but going forward, were no longer going to be using the Canadian Server as the main location), the Canadian Parliament just passed there 2023 budget and included is the extension to Life + 70, but fortunately this only affects future composer's...

Re: Sorabji quintet

One of the problems with this is that intellectual property laws in US are unique in certain respects and differ materially from those in most other countries. Over the years, the 70 year rule has increasingly been adopted as the norm (although it varies in some details from country to country) but,...

Re: Sorabji Concerto

We have an extensive list of corrections to this score, compiled by cellist and composer Mervyn Vicars and approved by the composer, although it is no doubt far from comprehensive; all of these early published Sorabji scores are error-ridden, some far worse than others and this is one of that tiny h...

Re: Sorabji quintet

In the case of the piano quintet we cannot be sure what the copyist might have added or subtracted (albeit as sanctioned by the composer should either case pertain) or even gotten wrong because the original ms. is not known still to exist; there are certainly errors in the published score, as is the...

Re: Sorabji quintet

On the basis of what I read above, it might be argued that the original manuscript of this work would also be in the public domain in US (although, as its whereabouts are unknown and location undocumented, it seems a fair bet that, a century later, it is now lost). A further point is that a new type...

Re: Sorabji quintet

A composer is entitled to copyright his/her own work and/or a copyist's copy/edition thereof without publishing it or having it published. The engraved published score of Piano Quintet No. 1 is indeed dated 1923 but the copyist's copy was not made available until the late 1980s and would not be avai...

Re: Sorabji quintet

The publication appeared in 1923 but the copyist's copy was never published until it was issued by The Sorabji Archive in the latter 1980s so, as previously mentioned, it should not be uploaded to IMSLP.

Re: Sorabji quintet

The copyist's manusript copy was not published at the time of publication of the engraved edition and so should not be uploaded here.
