Re: Brass Composing and Arranging (usw/etc...)

My only thought was "sixty three brass pieces???" It sounds a bit... uhm... overpowering, no matter what you might add to soften the tone. I'd pull those numbers down so you avoid sounding too Sousa. I mean, seriously, no matter how well it's orchestrated, it's still gonna sound like the U...

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.

Now, now, dont be sad. Again, you were putting things out there for discussion, and sometimes sheer thread drift took the topic to interesting places not anticipated by the subject as originally presented. I didnt mean to suggest that no one responded: people did. What I meant -- and probably didnt ...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

I'm prepping myself for my biennual RING Day. Fourteen hours, nothing but Wagner. It sounds silly, but it gives me enormous joy to do this. This time around it's the Barenboim: a ludicrous production visually, but God above those singers..... EDITED SOME TIME LATER TO ADD: My god. That was... so... ...

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.

Yagan, if I may interject a note? IMHO, what happened was that Allegro was setting up discussion threads on things that interested him -- and no one else was. Frankly, I dont think it merits a separate forum, and I doubt it hinders communication and discussion. Folks come here to talk about music an...

Re: Lourie piece

And this is the thing that bugs the living ^%&$ out of me when it comes to copyright. The man died in 1966. It's an eighty-year-old non-published piece, which means it was probably performed once and never again. And we're forbidden to share this guy's creation because Disney is worried about it...

Re: is the image the property of a library?

I know that if you go to some of the museum sites, you'll find a copyright notice watermarked (discretely) into them. The French and English, in particular, do this, something I first noticed when researching medieval art for a project. When I asked how anyone could claim "ownership" of an...

Re: Most Interesting Italian Music Terms You Have Come Across

Ravvivando (I think, I'm not 100% sure) means to play "as if you're behind the wheel of a 65 Mustang on a five mile straightaway".

But that's just a guess. :)

Re: La grand-Duchesse (Offenbach)

There's a "tableux" (I don0t know the word in english!:) ) missing!
Uhm... no, actually. A "tablueau" is a scene, a change in scenery within an act. In this edition, Act Three is divided into two scenes. The second starts on page 268 of the pdf, 265 of the score.

Re: Your Top 5 Favorite Pieces

Okay, guys, but to re-iterate the question Yagan asked earlier: *why*? Why are these your favrouties? What is it about them that should make me want to track them down and listen?

C'mon, let's see more than just lists. This is a discussion forum, remember?

Well, to be fair, it's not like someone didnt scan the pages. It appears this particular edition doesnt have the music you mention.

Re: Confidence Problems with Performance

I dont perform publicly (to which some might say "Thank God!"), but I've been on stage and my line of work as an exhibit and trade show designer demands I make presentations to clients... which is in effect putting myself out there because it's my design under critical consideration. Like ...

Allegro, dont sweat it. Water under the violin bridge.

I was having a really rotten weekend. We'll chalk it all off to experience all around, okay?

Re: Over-Used/Over-Done things in the world of music..

Not at all. One of the biggest laughs I get from the Hoffnung series is the Grand Grand Festival Overture, which is a relentless send-up of almost every cliché you just wrote. One of the best moments is when the music builds and builds and builds and you think it's building to this amazing seventh-t...

Not your usual orchestra performance...

... not by a long shot. But at the same time, I'm sure that, even for a joke piece, this posed a whole raft of interesting musical and technical challenges. Check the video of the full performance (which is about four minutes long) and see if you arent as impressed as I was with how he took such raw...

Re: Your Top 5 Favorite Pieces

I know "Pineapple Poll" very well, actually -- and youre right, not one of Sullivan's best. :) Uh, if you knew it so well, then you'd know it's not by Sullivan in the sense that he wrote the music as it stands. Charles Mackerras arranged it from various music of Sullivan into a cohesive b...
