For everybody willing to play a little with a wiki with build in lilypond support, have a look here: http://www.wikisophia.org/wiki/Wikitex (Also nice for Math, Chemistry, Chess, and a whole lot of other stuff. Just play around in their sand box). That's very interesting. If one could align each sca...

It wouldn't be balanced, of course. It might be truthful, but it would be designed to only show the interest of those who got it enacted (those who can get it enacted) - the copyright holders themselves. (Too cynical?) Here they will have to face people asking questions, and protesting. Many parent...

Copyrightholders regularly complain about lack of respect for copyright. But this is no wonder, as current copyright laws are highly in excess of what is needed to achieve copyright's purported goals. People feel no moral issues when copying work, because there are none... The same copyright holders...

I was wondering how a distributed proofreader schema might work for detailed comparison of different editions. This could be very important for determining the validity of copyright claims on various editions that have been issued in the last 50 years, esepcially in separating interpretative editio...

[...] The workflow of Mutopia is a single 'typesetter' submitting a completed project, not a distributed group working on the same project. Again, similar to Project Gutenberg before DP. Also, the project wouldn't have to use the Lilypond format as its storage/output. It could use something else - ...

If the (original) words are still copyrighted, then the music stay copyrighted also, even if its composer died 100 year ago. The author of the words and the composer have the same status of "co-authors", and the protection delay starts with the death of the last surviving one . I don't th...

Secondly, How can we - with a messed-up-system - get the IMSLP back online? And that question is more interesting at this point. The only thing I can think of, is obeying the laws from the countries where te site can be seen [...]. If someone else knows an alternative: I would like to hear those! b...

Your right, the publishers deserve no right to the music they publish, after all they are not the ones who create it. But, how else will composers get there music out to everyone while still making a living. Even in strongly fortified systems, there are always cracks. New composers have the option ...

No lawyer, me, but I know that Gershwin's works went out of copyright in the UK in the late 1980's and a few years later when I was enquiring about them at Chappell's (the London agent) I was informed that they were again subject to copyright restrictions, so I guess that new legislation can put wo...

Re: 50 vs 70 years

We have about 1.000 years of written music and the discussion is now about 2% (20 years) of the status of 'public domain'. So there is still a lot to cover for the whole world. Those 20 years can be covered for the countries which have a 50 year limit. And with an IMSLP you can have a strong statem...

Re: Help with IMSLP

As a musicologist i think it is a big loss that the IMSLP has been closed. I know the basics of copyright, music and computers to offer the following: I would like to reopen the IMSLP on my own account and turn the site into a completely legal music site (which is not that hard, because the site wa...

Re: Isn´t this the beginning ogf a discussionon piracy ?

Once I was blamed on this site for introducing a political debate about copyright and about changes in the legislation. I did this as a sympathizer - not a party member ! - of the Swedish Pirate Party. Now other people here seem to discuss the same issue, just without mentioning the growing politic...

I personally believe in the life of the composer and that's it. That would cause a dangerous incentive to kill a composer ;-) But seriously, I think we should study copyright laws, and the duration and scope of rights granted in relation to their stated purpose, that is to promote arts and science....

Re: So sad

My posts have been an honest attempt to counsel reality in a bad situation. As a published author, I am very aware of copyright abuses around the world and I also know how much money and legal wheel spinning is involved. While each of those in countries with excessive life+ formulas might fight to ...
