Re: Are fantasias really arrangements?

Only in an older sense of the term than is commonly used now. Depending on how far it departs from the incorporated material, these can range anywhere from original compositions to a simple pastiche or medley of the famous tunes. In any case, that was one of the reasons the OpDerivs template was set...

Re: Joseph Jongen - concert a cinq op 71

That would definitely be a piece worth having. I'll see if it turns up when I visit some black holes and similar dark venues next time. Russia theoretically has a copyright law, but its application is .... peculiar.

Re: How can I simplify the Scanner, Uploader and Date fields?

Not as you describe. Sometimes you can use Scanner=myfriend (no number) if that person did the majority of the scans and then use Scanner 5=coulonnus Scanner 6=coulonnus for the remainder. This seems to work only for newer items though.

Re: system messes up titles

You can put whatever you like in the General Information section of the work page - even Kanji characters and much else. That's the place Google and other index bots use most often anyway. The downside is that you sometimes have to amend after the fact as the system will default to an initial cap ev...

Absolutely not. There would be little point in having collection pages if that were the case.

Re: What has happened to my submission?

Collection pages are really not for new editions - and especially arrangements - of individual works. Invidual works should ideally have their own pages. This is not always expedient so we often allow such things to pile up until someone - usually me but also others - takes the time to set up pages ...

Re: Copyright status, Telemann concerto

The operational thing here is the legal definition of the term "publication". The existence of copies made by someone other than the composer or one of his known copyists is substative evidence that publication took place in the composer's era or shortly thereafter.

Re: work first published after the death... 25 years

This rule primarily applies to the EU and countries whose copyright laws are inspired by those of the EU. Thanks to the Motezuma decision of 2005, the person or entity making the claim basically has to prove the item was never copied or distributed before. There is no limitation on the age of the it...

Re: Issues with Bottesini work pages

In order to not be classified here as an arrangement (and transposition), the "Concertino" really must have some significant structural differences with the Concerto. Musicologists who create separate catalog numbers for arrangements and transpositions of the same work (Liszt, for example)...

Re: Uploading to a specific instrumentation page

He does not have to split up the collection - that is why we added collection pages a few years ago. This way he can get his items up relatively fast and the crosslinks between the content listing and the Bach pages can be handled later.

Re: How do I remove a misleading tag from a work sheet?

The tagging system covers arrangements as well as the original version. As the librarians will no doubt inform you if you start messing with them - you should leave tags alone unless you are on the library team.

Re: An unusual query about submissions

There is no copyright problem in doing this. The one you already uploaded was simple enough to deal with in terms of placement beneath the Arangements and Transcriptions tab. Rameau is no problem but there are already quite a few piano only arangements of later operas, often with supralinear text. H...

Re: A Copyright Problem until 2084

The answer to question one is "yes". Names, titles and short phrases are not subject to copyright in nearly all locations. Number two is more in the "maybe" category. A link, in an of itself, doesn't constitute an infringement. However, a link as you describe could be considered ...

Re: What is "commercial use" of sheet music?

In the US, the whole question of critical editions remains unchallenged in court, even though (as explained on our copyright pages) it's unlikely they would meet the "threshold of originality" established in Feist vs. Rural . Performance rights societies do not collect on performances or b...

Re: Bruckner Symphony 8 #465769

That's a tagging error. Haas' editions of the Bruckner items are free in the US, as Kalmus has been printing and selling them for decades.
