Re: Adding fingering to a piano score

That might be an interesting case to take to court. The problem with fingerings is that there is not a lot of case law to go on, so it's all a matter of how 'original' a fingering can be (for countries whose "threshold of originality" is high) or how much 'sweat of the brow' was involved (...

Safest thing is to split them up as Daphnis said.

Re: Alkan- Sonata for piano op 33

In nearly all cases with Alkan, Billaudot was merely reprinting the original, sometimes in the corrected reprints issued by Costallat around 1915, others just plain reprints of the originals.

Re: A castigating comment from a copyright reviewer

For the very reason stated above - we only know that it's PD in the USA, not Canada . When you upload to IMSLP, it goes to a server in Canada . Kalmus and other reprinters don't tell you what they reprinted. As it happens, you were lucky with the Ricordi collection of six overtures arranged for pian...

Re: Multiple authorship, presence in Composer page

We also have a means to set up Collaboration pages, which work identically to Collections

|Page Type=Collaboration (added field in General Info)

{{CollabCat|FN|LN}}

This is good for cases where two or more composers worked together on a single work.

Re: Hassler- 6 Leichte Sonaten

Actually, this another case of a publisher pulling a Henle-style trick. The edition Zeyar added would not fall under the 'scientific edition' standard because the editor added fingerings, slurs, etc. The thing to keep in mind is that the German Section 70 does not use the term 'urtext' by the German...

Re: A castigating comment from a copyright reviewer

The assumption that all Kalmus issues are public domain is only true for the United States. For example, Kalmus issues (via their LudwigMasters imprint) two early pieces by Aaron Copland (died 1990). They were both published in Paris before 1923 and are therefore free in the USA. They are not free a...

Re: It's in Sibley, Rochester but not scanned

Eric's reply is seconded. The folks at Sibley often will add things of this nature to the scanning list on request. About the only time they do not is when something is in such delicate condition that it would not survive the scanning.

Re: Copyright for engraving of Holst's Jupiter 2 pianos

It is actually free everywhere except the United States. Imogen's editing is of a 'critical edition' nature and well over 25 years old. The publication in 1949 is why it's locked up in the USA.

Re: Under the sky of Paris

The short answer is "no". If the original item is under a full copyrght you cannot publish (that's what happens when something is made available here) an arrangement of it under CC without the blessing of the copyright owner.

Re: A castigating comment from a copyright reviewer

Information is crucial to copyright review and the problem you had was a severe lack of needed info. A major part of the lack of info stems from the Kalmus/Belwin reprint of a collection you scanned. Many reprint houses tell you absolutely nothing about what they reprinted. The worst cases of all ar...

Re: Gershwin - some pointers

That's a very strange interpretation. The term in the EU is life plus 70 years of the last surviving contributor. 1983 plus 70 years = January 1, 2054. How they came up with 2011 is quite a mystery. A work with text by Ira first published before 1923 in the US might be free in some EU states, but th...

Re: C.P.E. Bach- 6 Sonaten nebst ' 6 neuen Sonatinen'

As something published by the state owned press of the German Democratic Republic operating under the imprint Breitkopf und Hartel, this item was never subject to copyright in the USA. I believe it has been reprinted by Kalmus (subsequently Masters) for a long time. As for Canada and the EU, much de...

Re: 'composer' field for collections

Not how it works. If Stefani was the one who assembled the collection it goes under his personal category as a collection. This does not mean he composed any music therein. The composer field here means only that he is the author of the collection.
