Re: The most visually beautiful sheet music at IMSLP

Interesting question. The first thing that popped into my head was "Von der Hinterweltlern" from Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra. At it's climax, Strauss spreads the beautiful theme over strings divided into 14 sections! It makes my jaw drop every time read the score. The Imslp f...

Philip Glass on the Colbert Report

Even if you don't like Colbert or Glass, this video is great. You can skip the political and tabloid stuff and go right to the Einstein and Koyaanisqatsi parody at 3:00.

Britten and Pears performing Schubert's Die Schone Mullerin. I actually really like Pears' singing, and Britten was a phenomenal pianist.

Re: Best Endings

Just listened to Hartmann's first symphony and I had forgotten what an awesome opening it had. You should check out Hartmann if you like any post WWII composer.

Saint-Saëns: Carnaval des Animaux, with Dutoit leading the London Sinfonietta. Right now I'm up to No. 4 "Tortues". I think Saint-Saëns was very wrong in the assuption that it was a worthless piece. Surely not his best, but still brilliant. Joseph Haydn- Symphony No. 76 in E-flat major: II...

Top Ten Favorite Operas

You asked for it pml, I answered. It will be hard for me to pick just 10. I'll start from the top and go down (you can list less if you like). 10. Schoenberg - Moses und Aron. Awesome music and contains one of twentieth century opera's most fantastic scenes (the Golden Calf scene!!!!!!!!!!!!!) 9. Ko...

Copland: Opera The Tender Land . From the Michigan Opera 1978 conducted by the composer himself. One of the better American operas, but definitely not up to Vanessa standards. Certainly some of Copland's best music, too. [Hansel und Gretel] This is one of my favorite operas and I believe the best Ge...

Hindemith: Das lange Weinachtsmahl - Introduction, aka the greatest harmonization of "God Rest ye Merry Gentleman" ever. Marek Janowski conducting my third favorite Hindemith opera (after Die Harmonie der Welt and Sancta Susanna ). It's a shame there's only one recording available (and in ...

Re: Favorite Climaxes

Great question. In no particular order, I would say: Wagner: Tristan und Isolde - Contains the best climaxes in all of music. My favorite comes at the end of the famous love duet. Tristan and Isolde build off of the famous Leibestod motif as the reach their final line "Höchste Leibes lust!"...
