Re: Proposed new genres

I came into this discussion after it started, but I haven't seen criticism that a hierarchical format was too complicated, or that 8 categories was too many. We have standard categories that are in widespread use - users will expect to see them. This is how we communicate with each other and can und...

Re: Proposed new genres

Davydov, the problem is that we are talking in terms of hierarchies, but the proposal is 2 flat lists, one of which is far too general to be useful for users, and the other of which is optional and unsystematic. The proposal is a step backward from the current system, in two different directions at ...

Re: Proposed new genres

Categories like "Suites" are not sub-categories if they can be put in more than one category. It sounds like you're proposing there be a mandatory "Category" field and an optional "Genre" field for each work. More specific to the mandatory fields, no user is going to be...

Re: Proposed new genres

"Stage Works" is a super-category containing other categories, not the works themselves. The works are categorized "Opera", "Ballet" etc, which categories are then grouped under "Stage Works". Mixing all these works together in the super-category is not standa...

Re: Verdi - Stiffelio - vocal score

How about Puccini instead? Two other Verdi scores (Jerusalem and more significantly Macbeth) could also stand better quality scans/source material. Although one significant Puccini work is not PD in most places, we can't do much about that; but we do have all the PD scores in good quality B/W scans.

Re: "Alpine Symphony" by Richard Strauss

In fact it is working for "Das Schloss am Meere", but why are "Eine" and "Ein" overriding the default sort? If they were numbers, we'd write "1".

Re: "Alpine Symphony" by Richard Strauss

Oy, the default sort template works for Verdi's "I Masnadieri" and "I Lombardi", but not for Strauss??

Verdi - Stiffelio - vocal score

Would somebody be able to make a clean scan of the Stiffelio vocal score?
It was not included in CD Sheet Music's so-called "Verdi Operas: The Complete Vocal Scores", and currently the only uploaded copy is a very large full-color scan of a degraded book that is missing notes...

Re: Proposed new genres

the sub-genres shown are only possible examples, and people should be encouraged to add to them as they think necessary
If we don't think this through, and debate what we need, as you mention, we will just end up with a random jumble of categories which will not help users find things.

Re: Proposed new genres

Looking outside of vocal music, I came up with some questions: -Would "Film music" be a type of "Incidental music" -Would using "Concertante" obviate the need for a double concerto category? -By the definition given, isn't "Concertante" a sub-category of "...

Re: Proposed new genres

Liturgy is broader religious term, but would this cause confusion in music, where we have many "Masses"? A number of operas contain ballet sequences (i.e. Gioconda), but you wouldn't categorize them, or a 19th century Russian work in a baroque French genre, no matter what the composer call...

Re: Proposed new genres

I also like the idea of an "Instructional" category which would include both methods and exercises. If this is going to be a subcategory of the different instruments, put one under "Vocal" as well... Under staged vocal works: -"Singspiele" and "Operas-comiques"...

Re: FTP files

These folders should be taken off the FTP server because they have all been completed and uploaded: ftp://imslp.org/logo_infested/CDSM/Vocal%20Scores/Berlioz/ ftp://imslp.org/logo_infested/CDSM/Vocal%20Scores/Handel/ Update: French Art Songs < I may have them all now, but I still need to double chec...

I have a (slightly messy) copy - is it possible to upload something that would only be legal in the US? (The librettist died in 1966)
