Re: american flag for US-only copyrighted files

The first impression I got was that the piece in question was either a national US piece, or has some strong ties to the US. Which it doesn't, other than the fact that only US users can download it. I would have thought that all these warnings would suffice in terms of any legal actions against IMSL...

american flag for US-only copyrighted files

I strongly oppose this practice, as it appears on this page (and I assume similarly-tagged pages): http://imslp.org/wiki/The_Firebird_%28Stravinsky,_Igor%29 I understand that IMSLP wants (and must) protect itself from any future copyright infringements, and that it is (obviously) not responsible who...

Most Popular Composers page?

I was wondering, to make it easier for the general public to access widely wanted scores by popular composers, is it possible to create a page with like, the 10 or 100 most popular composers? (which, I imagine, would include Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Chopin etc etc) The upside of this would be that p...

Re: Main Page

@BKhon: fantastic - this is the place to share them! :) @KGill: I agree with Feldmahler that we shouldn't remove the copyright notice just to be on the safe side. As the text is quite short, we could just put it in a little box under the recent recordings additions list, or something. Not sure I und...

Re: Main Page

I completely agree with what you said :) I was actually quite impressed with the trimming of the Contributing section on the main page. Although it feels a bit frustrating that there is a whole section on the main page dedicated to one line of text! I really like the idea of using design to convey i...

Re: Main Page

@feldmahler: no no, I meant my own text on top of the boxes - maybe use a different shade of grey or something? @davydov: it's sad how after 15 years of IE they still haven't implemented support for elementary web design principles and features. apparently IE9 will be fully compatible with css3, but...

Re: Main Page

cool, that's what I came up with: http://imslp.org/wiki/Main_Page - any suggestions are more than welcome. :) I personally don't like the formatting of "Scores" and "Recordings" - I think they look too crude. Also, I understand if people don't like the rounded edges (should work ...

Re: Main Page

Main Page

I couldn't find an appropriate forum for this, so please feel free to move it wherever you think it should be. Can we not make the newly-added "Browse Musical Works" section on the main page look better? With a tiny little bit of CSS we can a) make the whole boxes a button, with a highligh...

Recordings and Performers

I think it's great that we finally host recordings, although I remember that much of the administrative members were opposed to the idea for a long time due to copyright issues (although the signature thing seems to be taking care of that and any issues that come up with any problematic scores). A f...

Re: Typesets of more recent scores

In this particular case (with Schulhoff's Inventions), the work was performed during the composer's lifetime, but before the first publication. Is it still public domain in Canada?

Re: Typesets of more recent scores

But, say, I somehow had access to whatever source documents *they* used to produce their published edition, these documents being the composers' manuscripts in the case that the edition is the first publication of his works. The manuscripts are public domain (in Canada), since the composer died in 1...

Typesets of more recent scores

I recently typeset some scores by Erwin Schulhoff (d.1942 - so PD in Canada), as the edition I had dated from 1993 and was thus still in copyright pretty much everywhere. I (perhaps naïvely) assumed that there must have been another published score of an earlier date, but I was wrong. I later saw th...

Family trees?

I think it would be quite helpful (and interesting!) to be able to browse composers who belong to the same family (e.g. Bach, Strauss, Mozart, Schulhoff etc) by their family tree. Maybe in their Composer Page there could be a string saying "X's son, and father of Y." and then a link saying...

Re: New Period

Yeah, "Contemporary" sounds good. I've also mentioned how I dislike the use of "Modern" to signify anything after 1945, as I think "Modern" comes with particular connotations and associations in mind (the modernist movement), which pretty much finished at about 1945, an...
