@daphnis: but consider, the low, low cost of ~$150 would be going to Faber and not U-E (bad luck for any royalties for Rudolf Barshai). Two sets of facsimile copies of the Mahler sketches have been released. The first was a set published by the company of Paul Zsolnay, which gave the principal sketc...

Hi Yagan, the score Daphnis refers to is the Křenek arrangement, and has only the 1st movement (Adagio) and the 3rd (Purgatorio); it was prepared for a 1924 performance by Ernst Křenek with contributions from Franz Schalk, Alban Berg and Alexander Zemlinsky. In many respects the later editions surpa...

A "Jaroslav K. Bauer (Canada)" is mentioned as having had an exhibition (i.e., a scholarship) to the Royal Academy of Music extended by one year - source JSTOR, in The Musical Times, Volume 54, No. 839, page 33 (1 January 1913). I'd regard it more likely for Bauer to be the composer, thoug...

Hi all, as I may have said elsewhere - it is fairly standard practice for encyclopædic works (like Grove or MGG) to list a composer's principal publishers as an aid to research, and I see no reason why IMSLP, being a website, can't improve on this by actually providing links to the publisher's websi...

And I would add, despite the essay on the Lilypond website, I have still seen some fairly shoddy work generated from Lilypond, because the computer can only automate so much for you: typesetters still need to tweak a score for highest quality output.

Hi "Maestro" (Mastro1), I think some of those who replied to you may have over-reacted somewhat and upon reflection would probably want to temper the occasional ad hominem phrasing, and instead simply respond to the arguments. It is arguable both IMSLP and Universal Edition have tried to &...

Report on the status of the acquirement of volumes from the NMA: Firstly, while we wait for the IMSLP to re-open, the NMA incorporation project will move ahead slowly in preparation. Despite the current lack of the IMSLP wiki, there are tasks that can be achieved currently which I will be actioning ...

Hi aslsp-fi, They are known for making multiple editions of the same works, often mixing them up. [...] Please note that in a professional contest these accidents are not musicological discussions but potential disasters involving lost reharsal time and money. I agree. Indeed, I've been correspondin...

Before I start, it would be opportune to state that I AM NOT A LAWYER, should anyone be so foolish as to treat the following as "legal advice". Which Mahler works being claimed by UE appeared on the ISMLP site? This, and all other related information, appeared on the first page of this thr...

Hi Jason, how strange - yesterday I composed a short Fanfare for the orchestral brass: 4 horns, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones (3 tenors & 1 bass) and bass tuba. A pity the takedown of IMSLP.org prevents me from easily sharing it! Fanfare (the magazine of "musical causerie") ran for only half...

alsp-fl: I agree with your sentiments especially in regard of Mahler and Schönberg, and U-E's bravery in continuing to publish their scores in the face of almost total neglect. IMSLP downloads most certainly doesn't represent a lost sale every time, as for the reasons you cited musicians and listene...

May I suggest retaliation, such as a boycott of U-E, is not in anyone's best interests? For the time being, I would be happy to see the vast majority of IMSLP's pre-1900, unimpeachably public domain repertoire, be moved to being hosted at a University or other site. The remainder of the IMSLP corpus...
