Re: Opinion's on the Met's New "Tosca"

Don't get me wrong, I loved Zeffirelli's production, but I think change isn't necessarily a bad thing. Some of Bondy's choices were questionable, but I still thought the production "worked". As for booing, I agree it sends a powerful message, but is it really appropriate in an opera house....

Opinion's on the Met's New "Tosca"

I was able to watch the Met's new production of Tosca the other day on my area's local tv station, and honestly, I was blown away. I do not believe it should have recieved the scathing reviews it recieved. I thought the first act was the best. Alvarez sang a beautiful rendition of "Recondita&qu...

Re: Best Endings

I will dare to challenge you on that. What about Ravel's Mother Goose Suite (contrabasson, though), Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 (right after the march theme), Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and Ravel's Piano Concerto in G. I did mention the Rite as the best (or at least my favorite). As for contrab...

Re: Good Clarinet pieces...

How about Busoni's Clarinet Concertino, or Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes? I also love Hindemith's Clarinet Sonata, but it is non PD.

Gustav Holst's "The Lure" (1921)

Anyone have the score of this piece that could upload it (not sure of the copyright status though)?

Re: Best Endings

Just listened to KA Hartmann's Eighth Symphony, one of my favorites of his. It has a fantastic opening. His Sixth also opens with probably the second best bassoon solo in 20th century music (After Le Sacre of course).

Isn't that great? I love how back then people, celebrities even, knew who William Schuman was, but today he is all but unknown.

Re: Schuman vs. Schumann

Have you listen to the band versions that William Schuman transcribed himself? There is an extension on the Chester movement and the ending of it is amazing. These are an upgrade to the orchestral version. I have listened to both versions and they just don't captivate me like some of his other comp...

Re: Schuman vs. Schumann

Between the symphonies, I'd have to say my favorite are by Robert. His third and fourth are absolutely fantastic. That isn't to say I don't like William's symphonies. I really like his third and fourth as well, funny. Between their operas, I'd take Mighty Casey over Genoveva every day. Mighty Casey ...

Re: Need Suggestion for Choir/Orchestra Piece!

Bernstein's Chichester Psalms is a really enjoyable piece to perform and play. It has some extremely difficult parts, and you would need a counter-tenor/treble to perform the second movement. Another great piece is Prokofiev's cantata Alexander Nevsky . It has some cool parts for the choir that aren...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Janacek's House of the Dead, live from the MET via Sirius Satellite Radio internet stream. This is a superb production of a masterpiece. I recommend the DVD of this production taped in Europe, conducted by Boulez. Isn't that fantastic? I love Janacek's operas. Have you seen the DVD of Cunning Littl...

Re: Favorite Conductor(s)

I would also have to agree that Lorin Maazel is a terrible conductor (no offence meant to anyone). I'll stand up for the man and say that his recording of Prokofiev's complete Romeo and Juliet is fantastic. Young Juliet is extremely fast yet refined, Tybalt's Death is fast and exciting, the Minuet ...

Favorite Conductor(s)

A very general question, but just wondering who everyone's favorite conductor(s) is. I think my top two favorites would have to be Claudio Abbado and George Solti. Paul Hindemith would be my number three favorite, but I've only ever heard him conduct Bruckner's Seventh and his own works, so number t...

Re: Nineteenth Century Atonality

I hear much of Hindemith's music as atonal because of its frequent lack of musical and dramatic tension due to a lack of (or attenuation of) conventional harmonic patterns. It is for this reason that I don't like much of his music, which often sounds to me like directionless noodling. While Hindemi...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Zemlinsky: Lyrische Symphony conducted by Lorin Maazel with Fischer-Dieskau and Julia Varady. Truly amazing piece of music.

And at the risk of going off topic, I will say definitively that Dvorak is no God. Even if he was, I still wouldn't like his music. :D
