Re: Your Top 5 Favorite Pieces
I have to do nine, because these are very close.... 9. Mahler: Symphonies 3 and 4 (I consider them twins, as they have the most in common with each other...because the ideas from the fourth, grew from it's finale, which used to be the finale of the third, which is why alot of th themes are...

Re: Arrangements You Have Made
Just to clarify, I mean that if the arrangement has been already done and published for piano, it wouldn't be much fun to do another piano reduction. Wow..... my wording is off today. Not necessarily. People may have fresh ideas on how to transcribe a certain effect and one can substantially improv...

Re: Violincello, overrated?
I don't think the 'Cello is over-rated, but I do think the viola is ignored too often.... I think the over-rated string intrusment is the VIOLIN (not that I dis-like the instrument, I just think it's used much more often then it should be), but the 'cello is very.....flexible...in every range, which...

Re: Arrangements You Have Made
Beethovens Oboe Trio to some extent...2 Friends (Flutists) and I (Trumpeter) were doing a Beethoven project in German class and they left it to me to find something to play ('cause I'm the local symphonist in those parts). All I really did was transpose the English Horn part from "F" to &q...

Re: Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, overrated?
I personally think the whole concept of Piano concerto is becoming a little TOO overrated, I mean we really have enough of those. What about concertos for Trumpet, or Trombone, or Saxophone, or the Harp?

Re: List of Undiscovered Beauties
A. Bruckner's Requiem is rather intreging...it's just never played anymore The music of Hans Rott, who died young and was ALMOST forgotten. His symphony is amazing. The Harp Concertos of Elias Parish Alvars, François Adrien Boieldieu, William Mathias, and Alberto Ginastera. Johann Wilhelm Hertel's &...

Re: Mahler, Overrated?
Here is a list of quotes that bash Brahms. It is very painful for me to look at them. "There are some experiences in life which should not be demanded twice from any man, and one of them is listening to the Brahms Requiem.”~ George Bernard Shaw “The real Brahms is nothing more than a sentiment...

Re: Mahler, Overrated?
Uh, oh, this is going to get emotional . . . . . Seriously, though, without making people hugely upset, just because you think someone has no talent doesn't automatically make him evil, which is the connotation associated with Satan. Just what about Brahms is evil? Hey, emothins make the world go r...

Re: Mahler, Overrated?
It seems that composers like Mahler and Shostakovich are becoming very popular among musical communities, especially with the youth. Is it because their musical tastes have not matured and depended enough to appreciate the tranquil beauties of composers like Brahms or Mendelssohn. I have heard comm...

Re: Bruckner and Mahler Requests
The Bruckner 9 finale sketches are available but in relatively recent Bruckner Edition versions (their first publication which puts them under copyright). I had to pay good money for my copies. You might have better luck requesting the Mahler 9th manuscript score and the Mahler 10th sketches that w...

Re: Organ
Anton Bruckner was an outstanding organist in his day, but he never wrote much for organ exept a few preludes; I think one is in d. Bach is another good one... Cesar Frank was a good friend of Bruckner's and he wrote alot more organ pieces.... I'd start with Bruckner, then Frank, then finally Bach.....

Re: Personal Orchestration tastes for orchestral composers
I'm curious as to how often these pieces are being played, if at all. After +-20 years in a professional orchestra, I can honestly say that things like bass trumpet might not even be owned by a professional trumpet player. (Although most professional orchestras will own a set of Wagner tubas) Even ...
