"Strauss of the North"

One composer who is completely missing is the Danish composer Hans Christian Lumbye. I'm staggered as he was quite prolific and a direct contemporary of the Walz Strausses. Any ideas?

Re: Brahms : Viola sonata Op.120

The two Brahms sonatas were written originally for clarinet but later, Brahms himself authorised and provided the alternative viola part. I've had the pleasure of playing the both on viola and clarinet when I was a music student many years ago. They work delightfully on both.

Spring cleaning ...

G'day One of the great things about having this music available at the click of a mouse is that I'm now seriously considering getting rid of all my old scores (mostly pocket ones, but quite a few Dover), hence "decluttering" my living space. Anyone else thought seriously about this? Obviou...

Re: Vocal versus Orchestral scores

Sorry, if my post was misleading, let me be more succinct ... I'm refering to the level above the examples you provided. If you "search by composer name" you will initially get a listing of ALL works available on IMSLP. But, at that point, there is no reference to whether what is provided ...

Re: Beethoven Sonata 29 orchestration by Felix Weingartner

Hey Daphnis - I'm having a devil of a time finding this score anywhere, maybe I'm just not looking intelligently enough? Boolean searches scare me, I must 101 them ... ;-)

Re: Rating of scores

Hi Daphnis, Thank you for your understanding, I hope you understand my initial thread wasn't intended to be hostile (trouble with the written word, as you know, is that nuance and subtelty are very difficult to convey). If it cam across that way, please accept my sincere apologies, not my intention....

Re: Sullivan manuscript

Thank you one and all for your responses, at least it clarified one thing: if a manuscript is fragile, scanning can cause damage. I guess a one of scan ensures that a fragile piece of paper will last forever, paper does not. So I don't really see the problem IF the MS is really old (hundreds of year...

Re: Rating of scores

Daphnis, great, I have no problem with the 1 to 10 rating system. Please can examples be posted so there is some reference point? thanks

Rating of scores

Hi there! I really like the ratings feature as it can give me an idea of a general sense of the quality of the score (look obviously not musical content!). The arbitrary number from 1 to 10 seems a little over the top. Is it possible to suggest a more defined rating: 1 = poor (not fit for use) 2 = m...

Re: Percussion practice wiki on IMDBP?

@stephen of Cambridge In relation to typsetting percussion parts for ease of use, why not? Afterall, the only important thing is that the sounds produced is as close to what the composer painted, surely? The audience doesn't give a tincker's cuss and the conduct would probably be no more the wiser. ...

Sullivan manuscript

Sir Arthur Sullivan's manuscript (full) score of his last Savoy Opera (The Grand Duke) is held by Piedpoint Morgan in NYC. I contacted them about getting a digitised copy. There answer, firmly was, "no". Considering this music is now in the public domain, where to 'institutions' stand on t...
