Re: Score and Parts on one tab

Scores get a separate tab from parts for larger works. Generally, 5 or more instruments. An exception has been made for many famous string quartets where numerous editions of scores have been issued over the years. Most chamber music is covered by the Scores and Parts tab.

Re: Unpublished Canadian Manuscript

The permission of the copyright holder can expedite things. The work can be released under Creative Commons which will cover things worldwide.

Re: Downloading Reference Recordings

It's fine to dowload the recordings released under Creative Commons as long as the CC license terms are followed. Items in the Naxos library would be illegal to download.

Re: Can the publisher prolong the copyright by changing the drawings in the book ?

In a sense, yes. For example, if the publisher of Thompson's book added artwork by someone who lived until 1990 with attribution for it, the revised edition with new artwork is covered until 2041 in Canada.

Re: Jerome Kern

As long as there is no text by someone dead less than 50 years apart from names, titles and short phrases (like instructions), it should be fine.

Re: Rule of the Shorter Term for non-EU works

Here again we run into the problem of sound recordings (and all the associated copyright baggage), versus arrangements, versus performances, etc. The transcription of Winifrid Atwell's playing could be counted as an adaptation (an arrangement or derivative work) if it departs enough from the origina...

Re: Jelly Roll Blues editions

This is rather complicated area of copyright. On the one hand, Morton's 1924 recording is free and clear in Canada and the EU while it's still tied up (until possibly 2067) in the USA. Ironically, Kriss' transcription from the recording would be unlikley to qualify as an arrangement or derivative wo...

Re: autograph manuscript without composer's name

I would go ahead and add as the composer's autograph. If someone want's contest the attribution they can always post here.

Re: Collections of more than one composer

Who compiled the collection? Collections - provided it is an original selection of material (not something like Beethoven's 32 Sonatas) - are entitled to the same term in Canada that an arrangement is: Life plus 50 years of the last surviving contributor. If the author of the collection is and all t...

Re: table of contents (TOC) issues

How original are the comments? The two examples you cited are notes about…. 1. An alternate title under which the item is known (presumably from another public domain source). Moreover, in most places "names, titles and short phrases" are not even subject to copyright. 2. A possible altern...

Re: Pulcinella Clarification

If you look at the publisher citation in the file-listing itself, you'll see that the Chester vocal score was published in 1920.

Yes unless there is an additional editorial claim by Kris or someone else who died after 1945.

Likely free. Probably issued before William's death in 1915 as a supplement to the Purcell edition.

Re: Submissions Question

Arrangements go onto the page for the original - unless they are so free-form that they would be more accurately described as something like 'Free-Fantasy on <Original Title> by <Original Composer>', or the arrangement is of an anonymous work like a folk-tune, hymn, or carol. These exceptions are ad...

Re: Arthur Sullivan: The Grand Duke, in full score

You could even send the Finale-generated PDF (which are usually small enough to email) to myself or one of the other admins and we'd simply upload it for you. It will simply default to the "Scores" tab when added - which is where it belongs.
