My ranking of the composers: To me, Beethoven has that spiritual quality which makes him (for me) the greatest composer. His works are transcendental -- they point to something not of this world. Sorry to be so abstract, but that is how I find it. Bach is the master of balancing the superficially &q...

IMSLP got me out of so many tight situations, when I needed a score, and the library was closed... The other day I had the very dubious honor of playing the harp part to the Nutcracker on a synthesizer (welcome to Arkansas) and lo and behold, the big cadenza in the Waltz of the Flowers was complete ...

My university subscribes to the Naxos Music Library , a wonderful resource for recordings. Naxos has some tracks available that are re-releases of older recordings. However, some of these tracks are still under copyright in the US, but not in the EU (if my memory serves me correctly), so they show u...

Indeed, but both are non-circulating. The Library of Congress also has a copy. I would have to go and actually photocopy it on site, if they would even allow me. To my knowledge a reduction was never published. Given the rarity of the score it seems highly unlikely. Maybe if I get my hands on a scor...

I like Schoenberg. I don't listen to the atonal stuff for pleasure. The early stuff is quite nice, sometimes over the top (Gurre-Lieder). But is piano pieces (especially the Suite) and concertos are excellent. By far my favorite composer of the 2nd viennese is Berg. The Lyric Suite is the most wonde...

I agree about the ninth. The Scherzo is its best feature, while the last movement is impossibly vulgar. The first movement is OK, but nothing to its counterparts in the fifth and third. The third symphony is similarly made by it's funeral march, and I'm likewise not sold on the last movement. The fi...
