Re: Violincello, overrated?

Mozarts Sinfonia Concertante, K.364 - for violin and viola - was written in E flat Major. But the Viola part was written in D. The violist has to tune up the strings 1/2 step higher and play it as if it was in D... but it actually sounds in E flat. Many Violists nowadays just play it with normal tu...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Poor you.

I don't normally participate (also because I rarely listen to music while browsing the 'interwebs'): Bartok Piano Concerto No. 2

Re: Violincello, overrated?

Another question, what is the reason behind composers wanting to write alternate parts for the viola for pieces that were originally composed for the clarinet (e.g. Brahms and Reger). Is it because of the mutual qualities of timbre that both instruments share? Probably the range (the quality is sim...

Re: Considering other backends for IMSLP

The content is collaborative right? The content of IMSLP is the scores, the scores have nothing to do with a wiki on there own. Yes there are other contents, but if a way can be found to allow collaborative additions of these, then I see no need for a wiki. Wiki isn't the definition of collaboration...

Re: Mahler, Overrated?

Bit OT… but I don't know I'll probably check it later. There have been problems in the past with it.

Re: Violincello, overrated?

(As an Administrator) If you want to make another 'overrated' thread (or similar), just create one thread and change the topic every now and then. It is messing up the forum. Okay? In terms of this thread, the Cello is one of the most beautiful sounding instruments in it's low register, an expressiv...

Re: iPhone App

Well, it could be useful, but Apple hasn't exactly been not reluctant with eBook readers of late. Of course, I know of no-one. May be an idea though.

Re: Mahler, Overrated?

As a sidenote, for a trly fascinating read, check out this week's New Yorker, in which you find out that the FBI thought the Bernstein Mass was subversive and worth investigating.
McCarthy's peoples thought everyone was a red (and should be dead).

Re: Mahler, Overrated?

Yeah, I heard Elliott Carter and John Cage had connections with the KKK during the 50's and 60's. Actually, many serialist composers (and university lecturers) had connections with the CIA. The CIA wanted serialism to prove that the US is more 'free' than the the Soviet Union, so they promoted seri...

Re: Kindle

My uni's library has full scores of Mahler's symphonies (Universal () Edition) on miniature 19cm scores, they are just readable. The likeliness the Apple will release the tablet soon is pretty high (Gizmodo has it at 90%, but I don't trust them at all). There is the orders of ?10" scre...

Re: Mahler, Overrated?

(I still believe Beethoven is Romantic though). Agreed! His 'classical' works are poor classical pieces, and it didn't seem like he cared for the style all that much anyway. Most of his memorable pieces are Symphony 3 and later (almost), which is when he ditched to 'Classical' style for the birth o...

I agree in moving it but I see no point in closing it (whether it's the company or not, still at least slightly informative and helpful.

Re: is the image the property of a library?

It's more or less the equivalent of copyfraud, much like EULAs in software get around certain Copyrights. Google is in the US so the 'sweat of the brow' doctrine applies and they cannot copyright their scans (or photographs) of public domain material. IMSLP's public domain page indicates that this i...

Re: is the image the property of a library?

Does Google copyright Google Books? They are, after all, photographed and not scanned (in the conventional sense)?
