Re: Hands free wireless page turning device

you don't have to print them to paper with expensive inks - a very environmentally sound way to read and work with a full library of music, i should think. Actually I wonder if this is true. Printing a score requires ink and paper only once. Working with an electronic device requires electric energ...

Re: Copyright Laws Might Change

Michael Geist's blog (http://www.michaelgeist.ca/index.php) and Howard Knopf's blog (http://excesscopyright.blogspot.com/) are good places for information on what's going on with the Canadian copyright legislation.

Re: Classical Radio (non-commercial)

My home town (Phoenix, AZ) NPR Classical station is pretty good: http://www.kbaq.org/ . I don't listen to much streaming music so I don't have much else to compare it with. It's the only classical station in the area. In a short bit of googling I found this: http://classicalwebcast.com/ which lists ...

Re: is the image the property of a library?

Google is in the US so the 'sweat of the brow' doctrine applies and they cannot copyright their scans (or photographs) of public domain material. IMSLP's public domain page indicates that this is true in the US, Canada, EU, and most of the world (but this is in doubt in light of the recent wikipedia...

Re: JBig2 Image compression for music

Yeah, I'm not thinking about a full fledged OMR. Just a way to compress scans of music better while still being identical pixel for pixel to the original. Certainly going all the way and vectorizing as much as possible (staff lines, stems, note heads, bar lines, etc.) would compress even more effici...

JBig2 Image compression for music

Talking about OMR got me thinking about image compression tailored for pages of music. JBig2 works by classifying segments on an image as being alike. In this way it can store what an 'e' looks like once and then just store every place on the page where there's an 'e'. So it works great for text, bu...

Re: Advice on converting a printed score to Midi

Are you talking about Optical Music Recognition (OMR) software? Most I've tried haven't worked very well. The easiest open source one to try out is probably audiveris . I haven't had the best luck with it though. I've read some papers in the past about people using gamera for some parts of omr ( Sta...

Re: Solo beginnings

Tchaikovsky's 2nd starts with a full eighth-note chord; the 1st horn holds his note for the full measure, then starts the melody solo. And Mahler's 3rd, like Schubert's Great C Major, starts with a unison horn melody--but 8 of them! But "almost" only counts in horseshoes (and H-bombs and ...

Re: High Quality Scanning

15-30 minutes per page seems excessive. This should be minimized if one ever wants to scan a lot of pages. Daphnis is the most prolific scanner here. I wonder what minutes per page he usually achieves? Lately I've been scanning (flatbed) to 600 (or 300) dpi grayscale, then automatically post-process...

Re: General Information Project - who's with me?

These are the details people expect to be there and correct, but nobody wants/has the desire to actually fill in. I'd bet there are some lurkers willing to help for a few minutes here and there if there were some clear guidance of pages/composers to look at. I wish I had a good suggestion for how to...

Re: Request for Comments: Deprecation of MUS and SIB files

As mentioned ideally the source should attached to the pdf. It can be done relatively easily: pdftk music.pdf attach_files <source> output music_with_source.pdf Perhaps we could add some instructions and suggest this more prominently. Or do this upon upload with another field for source to make it a...

Re: Petrucci Library Press

That's way neat. Do we have data on the most popular downloads? That might be a good place to start looking for candidates. How many are we looking for to start out with? Would any work be needed to prepare the chosen works for binding?

Two Schirmer Piano Books

I recently inherited a few books which may be of interest here: - Haydn: The Creation Choruses (Already uploaded. Carolus was quick at filling in the information that I didn't know and a full vocal score was added shortly later. Wow thanks!) - Beethoven Sonatas Book 1. Edited by Hans Bulow and Sigmu...

Re: Rheinberger Clarinet Sonata

I've been wanting the Rheinberger Horn Sonata for a while also. Schott publishes both. "Köln : Amadeus, 19XX." was listed as another publisher for the clarinet sonata. I didn't see any other publishers for the horn sonata on worldcat which is somewhat surprising. So would the Schott editio...
