Please change the title of your thread to something more appropriate so readers will know what you want before reading it.

Regarding scanners: Number one rule regarding scanners (and most physical goods in this world)...you get what you pay for, maybe not entirely in scan quality but in functionality and software. Having said that, any scanner worth buying and keeping for longer than 6 months will run you a minimum of $...

If I may interject here, and I don't want this thread to go off topic, but I just couldn't hold my silence. Please do not buy any of those combo print-copy-scan machines as they are pieces of trash and a waste of money. They do all of those things, yes, but all of them poorly instead of any one well...

Wouldn't it be a good idea for the donor/someone taking on the desired composer to check if the piece is already uploaded? This would certainly cut down on his shipping costs and scan time.

I was speaking more along the lines of things NOT specifically on the site. For example, what is covered if I wish to, oh, say, go on an Orenstein rampage and scan everything of his I could get my hands on that has even been published? What is off-limits in this regard?

Does this apply to any of his published works regardless of when they were published and by whom?

I'm only familiar with the process insofar as my last university's access services were concerned. There, you could request a university-owned microfilm roll be transfered to digital medium using their equipment, but as far as doing it one's self, no, I've not seen it done.

Seconded. Gimp is basically the free-ware version of Adobe Photoshop and I could almost guarantee any manipulation of scanned images could be done entirely by Gimp. It's a great program. Avoid MSPaint at all costs.

Yes, unless you use something like MSPaint to edit the TIFFs in which case it will resample them, creating the huge look you sometimes see. The lesson being to NOT ever use MSPaint to edit your images!

Orchestral parts would be hard to come by as you'd need access in some manner to an orchestra library as this type of material is not kept by "normal" lending libraries. And creating parts from MIDI files is absolutely ridiculous to me, an orchestral musician, and I would never resort to t...

Sorry, but I think I may be in error. As far as I can tell, the version for 2 pianos was issued in separate movements from 1949-51 and later compiled into one volume in 1979, although with no mention of an editor. I think that this may be public domain in Canada, although I would bow to the scholars...

Well I went today to my former university library and examined both the M/W Works edition as well as the new(er) NBE. Our library has the M/W edition reprinted by Kalmus, and it does indeed look that volumes 21-25 were addendums to the initial volumes 1-20. Moreover, vols. 21-25 are noticeably poor ...

The original version was in fact for 2 pianos, but it was published less than 50 years ago so therefore not public domain in Canada.

Hmm...I'm a bit confused then on the contents of the Malherbe/Weingartner edition, because although I've not personally seen them, Kalmus has reprinted this edition and the records I've seen indicates 25 volumes where vol.24 is Benvenuto Cellini. Looking at another record of the original printing by...
