Re: Sapelnikov

It's extremely simple to correct such duplicates yourself: Just edit both old and new pages and copy/paste the code containing the music (the stuff between the {{ }} brackets under "FILES") to the new page, put it below the existing code there. Then add a {{delete|reason}} note at the top ...

Re: Upcoming changes

@discophage, I think I clarified things in my reply to Gschladt. Also what Joëlle Morton wrote: the work of typesetters at IMSLP is shamefully underappreciated. A lot of skills and research goes into producing a Urtext edition. The work of a well-payed librarian whose job it is to shove old manuscri...

Re: Upcoming changes

Perhaps things would become simpler if imslp would split in 2 sites, one for each category. The CC site would have no banner, delay etc. ;-) It isn't just simpler, it's absolutely necessary, in my opinion. Like Gschladt writes, IMSLP has sailed into murky juridical waters, since the subscription mo...

Re: Upcoming changes

Coulonnus, the fact that most regular (non-contributing) users have no problem with either the 15-seconds delay or a payed subscription doesn't come as a surprise. A subscription is still dirt cheap compared to the traditional ways of acquiring sheet music, as many people in this thread have pointed...

Re: Upcoming changes

The vast majority of the content of IMSLP is/was already widely available from other sources. IMSLP itself doesn't do anything as far as unearthing old manuscripts or old editions. How about the numerous rare editions, owned by IMSLP contributors, who went through the trouble of scanning, improving...

Re: Upcoming changes

If we don't let the institutions that go through the trouble and expense of unearthing those old manuscripts make some profit out of it... nobody will unearth those old manuscripts any more and we'll all lose. That made me chuckle. If this was true - people can't be motivated to work hard to uneart...

Re: Is a continuo realization an arrangement?

I was looking at this score today: http://imslp.org/wiki/Te_Deum_in_D_major,_MWV_B_15_%28Mendelssohn,_Felix%29#IMSLP408162 and remembered this old discussion. The continuo realisation in this piece is so elaborate that I fear it should be given the legal status of an arrangement - which means the sc...

Re: Upcoming changes

I welcome thoughtful constructive criticism from users (I've responded at some length to e-mail discussions with non-contributor users), but just saying "shame on you" or "I don't know why you need paid staff, oh and by the way, fix this problem for me" (which is doubly ironic a...

Re: Upcoming changes

I also wanted to argue against using CC-NonCommercial as a way to protect your content from misuse, because once you put a NonCommercial or NoDerivs clause on your work, you are keeping yourself exclusively in control of your work, making it non-free (as in freedom). I fear a NC-license is still ne...

Re: Upcoming changes

Mark my words: Someday, the IMSLP owners will make it "subscription only." I'll be done with it by then. They can't, since a big portion of the site consists of Creative Commons material with strict non-commercial conditions. Theoretically the owner could turn IMSLP into a pay site with o...

Re: Upcoming changes

I don't get the 15 seconds bit. I tried to look at a score today and wasn't allowed past page 1. 30 seconds? No. 60 seconds? No. So right now, I can't use IMSL at all. That reminds me of an organ student of mine, who complained today that she couldn't access IMSLP anymore, "without paying"...

Re: Removal of faulty/dispensable versions of files?

Max, thanks for the explanation. I get your point about transparency and trace-ability of each page's scores. I'm still wondering though - if removal isn't an option, wouldn't it be better to have the obsolete versions of each file blocked by default, so they can only be restored by request? That wo...

Re: Removal of faulty/dispensable versions of files?

I'm not talking about complete workpages or even files on work pages. It's logical that these need to be protected. What I meant is the sometimes multiple obsolete versions of individual files that show up when you click the file's number. For instance: http://imslp.org/wiki/File:PMLP648578-165.pdf ...

Removal of faulty/dispensable versions of files?

I was thinking... I use to publish typesets of my own compositions at IMSLP, and they seldom get posted in their final versions in one try. Not because I keep changing stuff, but because I'm a rather lousy proofreader of my own work, and often discover errors long after the original score is publish...
