Charles Ives: Set of Five Take Offs for Piano. Alan Mandel, Piano.
Just when you think it is going to be a tonal Ives work, he slams you with that second chord. Awesome.

Re: Looking for mass-suggestions (SATB+strings&organ)
Bruckner's masses, as well as Franck's mass, are some of my favorites in the genre. Poulenc's "Mass in G" is written for SATB alone, and although is modern is very nice. My only other recomendation is Britten's "Missa Brevis". It is written for organ and SATB, but the pieces are ...

Re: "IMSLP's biggest holes" - Most Wanted Scores
Since no one has responded to my topic about it, I suggest any works that are PD by Janacek, specifically his full or vocal scores to his operas Jenufa, Excursions of Mr. Broucek, Kata Kabanova, or Cunning Little Vixen (not sure about that one though). Also, the full scores to Taras Bulba and the La...

Janacek Operas
I would love if someone could post any full or vocal scores to Janacek's operas. Janacek is severely under-represented, so if anyone has any other scores of his, that would be great as well. Thanks.

Re: Sostenuto pedal usage in piano literature
In Prokofiev's "Ten Pieces from Romeo and Juliet" for piano, No. 6 "Friar Lawrence", at Bar 9 there begins a series of held low B-Flats. I've found that the sostenuto pedal is the only really effective way to to perform this passage, unless Prokofiev had intended some very blurry...

Re: Finest Melodies
Probably the most obscure music on my list, Poulenc's "Les Animaux Modeles" suite from the ballet. Check it out, you will be blown away. Especially the second and fourth movements, which contain some really sublime melodies. I checked that piece out, and it indeed blew me away. The beginn...

Wagner - "O du, mein holder Abendstern" from "Tannhäuser ". Bernd Weikel in a production at München conducted by Zubin Mehta. One of my favorite Wagner basses (the best Hans Sachs by far).

Re: Finest Melodies
Wagner was a great melody writer, but I think my favorite of his would have to occur during the "Karfreitag Musik" of Parsifal. The strings divided play a rustling triplet pattern as the oboe intones the "Flowery Meadow"(von Wolzogen) motif. The horns provide harmony, and soon th...

An early work of Puccini, therefore I'm unsure of its copyright. Could someone please upload if it can be? Thanks.

Beethoven: Fidelio - 1950 recording with Wilhelm Furtwangler conducting and Kirsten Flagstad as Lenore. Right now I'm at Rocco's Act 1 aria. Not the best recording, but Kirsten Flagstad's singing makes, like always, is stellar.

Re: Top Ten Favorite Operas
Good point made. I would never hate to see a Donizetti or Rossini production, but they are nowhere near my favorite operas. Probably wouldn't even be in my top 50. I've always felt it a shame that here in America we see more of that type of opera and and not enough lesser known operas, for instance ...

Thanks. Not too surprising, but it's a shame more of Weill's works aren't PD.
