Am I missing something, or is there no way to donate to the cause?

Messages of support are nice, but they won't get the archives back. Sending financial donations to help protect the project will help all of us in the long run.

I don't know if this gets asked a lot (it wasn't in that brief FAQ thread.)

Right now, monetary help wouldn't help that much. It is work rather than money right now. I'm not sure (will have to wait for feldmahler), but in the future it might be possible to donate to Gutenberg, thus helping IMSLP.
