Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet / Villa-Lobos Bachianas No.5

Post by musicnerd »

Hi,

I'm having some trouble finding the copyright status for Romeo and Juliet Op.64bis (First Suite) and Op.64ter (Second Suite). Are there 2 scores entirely PD in Canada or only some movements?

Also, the Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdXXQBd--4M was originally written for Voice and 8 Cellos, but there is a common version of Voice and Guitar, is that one also PD in Canada?

Romeo and Juliet Suites appear to have been published in 1938 by Muzgiz; Bachianas 5 for voice and guitar was published in 1947 by Associated Music Publishers, but remember that one of the authors of the lyrics is still alive (and the other died in 1966), so any score that includes the words is under copyright in Canada (and everywhere else). The cello parts we have uploaded do not contain any of the text. The Prokofiev should be OK in Canada, but it will be blocked from access because it's under copyright in the US.
