Songs by Szymanowski.

Post by guifre »

Hello everybody!

I have come across a PDF file with songs by Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937). Could anybody help me determine if they are suitable for upload?

1-- Op.11: 1905 1st ed. (U.E.), poet died before 1923, translator was born in the 1860s. --> Clearly PD
2-- Op.17: 1907 1st ed. (U.E.), one of its poets died after 1923, but more than 50 years ago. --> PD (isn't it?)
3-- Op.20: 1911 1st ed. (U.E.), but has a 1925 copyright claim (I thing it is copyfraud), poet died before 1923. --> PD (isn't it?)
4-- Op.22: 1912 1st ed. (U.E.), one poet died in 1936, the other in 1944. --> PD (isn't it?)
5-- Op.31: 1915 1st ed. (U.E.), poetess died more than 50 years ago. --> PD (isn't it?)
6-- Op.32: comp.1915, Ed. PMW, 1952, poet (Dimitri Davidov) is likely to have died more than 50 years ago.
7-- Op.41: 1920 1st ed. (U.E.), poet died in 1941.--> PD (isn't it?)[/list]
8-- Op.42: 1922 1st ed. (U.E.), poet died in 1980 :roll: . -->Non PD (is it?)
9-- Op.48: publ.1926 (U.E), re-engraving 1986. poet died in 1980 -->Non PD (is it?)
10--Op.49:publ.1928 (U.E), re-engraving 1986. poetess died in 1984 -->Non PD (is it?)
11- Op.52: publ ca. 1926, reprinted by the PWM (1949) -- Poet died in 1941, Polish translator in 1980 -->the translation could be deleted
12--Op58: publ ca 1930, reprinted by the PWM (1984)-- popular (PD) texts, translator died in 1983 -->the translation could be deleted
14--Hafiz's Grave/Grób Hafisa, comp. before 1920, publ. in 1938 (U.E.). Medieval poet. No translator names for the Polish, Frech or German transl.-->PD (isn't it?)
15--Soldier Songs (incomplete), comp.1920. Reprint PWM (1984), poets died before 1960.-->PD (isn't it?)
16--"Sinuhaje are coming down singing", comp.1924. Reprint PWM (1984). No poet mentioned (seems to be popular polish text).-->PD (isn't it?)
17--Polish Songs (arr. of polish folk songs): Comp 1926. Reprint PWM (1984). traditional texts (PD) -->PD (isn't it?)
18-- Dans les prés Fleuris: comp. ca.1925. No poet mentioned (seems to be popular french text).-->PD (isn't it?)
19-- Vocalise: comp.1928. Publ 1928. Reprint PWM (1984). No text. -->PD (isn't it?)
20- Op46-bis: Slopiewnie : comp 1921. First ed. in 1923 (U.E.). Reprint PWM (1984). Poet died in 1953. One translator died in 1934, the other in 1983.-->the translation could be deleted.

Well, I haven't been able to find information about some translators.
I think all the PWM editions are reprints, but only some of them have the original publisher (U.E.) written. No editors metioned anywhere. No "corrections" in brackets (such as added slurs or dynamics) found.

Many thanks! -- Guifré

1. PD in Canada (almost certainly), US, and possibly EU (more research would have to be done on the translator)
2. PD in Canada and the US. If the poet died more than 70 years ago, also the EU.
3. PD worldwide, if you can prove it's really a reprint.
4. PD in Canada and the US, but not the EU (for the poet who died in 1944)
5. See 2.
6. Probably PD in the US (I can't find evidence that it was renewed). I also can't find dates for the poet, so only possibly in Canada and the EU.
7. PD in Canada and the US, but not the EU.
8. PD in the US only.
9. Under copyright worldwide.
10. Ditto.
11. If the translation is deleted, PD in Canada. Possibly in the US as well, but not in the EU.
12. Ditto.
14. (what happened to 13? :wink: ) PD in Canada and EU, probably. Not in the US.
15. If the PWM really is a reprint and it was published earlier, then PD in Canada. PD in EU only if the poets also died before 1940. Possibly PD in the US (if it's a reprint).
16. Ditto, except possibly PD in the EU no matter what (unless there actually is a poet who lived past 1939).
17. Ditto.
18. First published in the 1980s, so no in Canada at least.
19. PD in Canada and the EU, and possibly in the US as well.
20. If the 1983 translation is deleted, PD in Canada, but not in the US or EU.
