G.A. Schneider "Combination concertos Op.83-90"

Post by kalliwoda »

SBB Berlin has digitized several concertos by Georg Abraham Schneider (op.83 for flute, op.85 for bassoon, op.87 for oboe, op.88 for flute & oboe, and op.89 for clarinet & bassoon). In addition, imslp already had the Basset horn concerto op.90 scanned by Det Kongelige Bibliotek Kopenhagen.
These concertos were conceived by G.A. Schneider as a set with identical thematic material, so that the expensive engraving of separate orchestral parts could be avoided. They share identical orchestral parts without a plate number. Only the solo part was composed to take advantage of the specifics of each solo instrument. Initially planned for flute (op. 83), clarinet (op.84), bassoon (op.85), horn (op.86) and oboe (op.87), it was then expanded to include two double concertos for flute & oboe (op. 88) and clarinet & bassoon (op. 89) as well as a concerto for bassethorn (op. 90).
Ref.: Meyer-Hanno, A.: Georg Abraham Schneider und seine Stellung im Musikleben Berlins, pp. 101-102. Berlin, Merseburger 1965.
Essentially these are relatively free arrangements of the same concerto in F major. SBB has complete sets for all 8 of these and may finally offer them all in digitized form, but it makes little sense to upload complete orchestral parts for all of them, and even less to upload cleaned monochrome versions for all of them, as they are identical prints from the same plates.
It may be best to have separate workpages for each (so that they can be easily found), but with a redirect to a combined page "combination concertos op. 83-90" or some similar title.

"Combination" concerto might be taken to mean something like a sinfonia concertante. "Concertos, op.83-90" probably is sufficient, especially if there are redirects from the individual opus pages.

(Looking forward to seeing these . . . .)

Now I created the page for the Concertos opp.83-90, and added redirects on the other workpages -
but I would have preferred to keep the titles for the individual concertos on the composer page to make them easier to find for the occasional visitor. Is there a way to do that, just have the title like Oboe Concerto Op.87 - and if you doubleclick on it, you are redirected to the Concertos opp.83-90 page?

You can do that by returning to the page that you redirected to the main page for Opp.83-90 and editing it to include the line [[Category:Schneider, Georg Abraham]] under the line that's already there. That way, the page will still show up in Schneider's category, but will also remain a redirect.
