Karl Georg Reutter and Karl Georg Reutter

Post by homerdundas »

Hello all,
We have another name collision and I'm wondering what to do. In this case the collision is between father and son.
Father
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Reutter
Son
http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Reutter,_Georg

I wish to create the page for the father and upload some works.

Note that we had discussed this previously and made a decision in this thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2869#p15417. This solution was altered in the last year or so to be Heinrich Albert (guitarist). It seems that this is a significant divergence from accepted cataloguing practice (LC uses dates to differentiate). Why was this change made? What should we do in this case?
Thanks.

My personal preference would be to use Roman numerals:
  • Category:Reutter I, Georg
  • Category:Reutter II, Georg
Although the Strausses have set a different precedent:
  • Category:Strauss Jr., Johann
  • Category:Strauss Sr., Johann
The Strauss solution could only work for father and son with the same name, and they have the disadvantage of not sorting correctly in lists (Junior comes before Senior), while Roman numerals can go up to 8 before sorting is a problem. I'd use the same system for the two Heinrich Alberts as well, although some people might feel it's only appropriate for successive generations.

Is there only one middle name, or is there a possibility of others that might distinguish the two? Technically, I and II (or Sr./Jr.) only works if each and every name is the same.

Mozart comes to mind, with his plethora of middle names that we don't ever really use, but they are his birth names nonetheless.

The father seems to be just Georg Reutter, for the son we might try Johann Adam Karl Georg Reutter.
Edit:
actually we could use Georg Reutter der Ältere
