This work:

http://imslp.org/wiki/La_Zingarilla_(An ... MSLP354449

is from a ballet, the "Grand Asiatic Ballet of L'Almée", performed at New York, Broadway Theatre, 1847-48 by the Monplaisir-Bartholomin Ballet Company (Choreographic work by Victor Bartholomin) featuring music by various composers."

Looks like a compilation of many things. Apart from the fact that this probably was not for piano, it will not be probable that the whole "ballet" will ever be uploaded.

One option would be "ballets" but another one would be "dances".

Suggestions?

Do we know whether this was one of the pre-existing works that was incorporated into the ballet? If so, then its later use in the ballet wouldn't affect the tags of the original work.

On the other hand, if "La Zingarella" itself has no existence outside of the ballet, then it should be moved to a page for the ballet, and listed there as an extract.

The description on the ballet scenario (held at New York Public Library) is "L'almée, un songe d'Orient; an Asiatic ballet in two acts and five tableaux. Music selected from the best composers of the day. Performed at the Broadway Theatre by the ballet company of MM. Bartholomin and Monplaisir [microform]."

It seems to me if the music was "selected", then it was pre-existing. NYPL has no more than the scenario, which would only indicate the story line, not individual composers.

As to instrumentation, the sheet music has a depiction of the dancers from the ballet, so it could be arranged for piano because it was a very popular number from the ballet. That part would either have to be "und" with an arrangements header, so that it comes up on a list of piano music, or "pf". Either way, I think a comment that it might have to be changed at a later date due to uncertainty over the original should be added.
