'Genre' entry for a work page

Post by KGill »

What should I select for a ballade for piano with spoken voice? None of the available categories exactly fit...would 'Lieder' be the closest?

Probably....custom genres would be great, but impossible, and everyone would just make one for each piece.

On a similar note, W.C. Handy's Memphis Blues is currently listed as a "chanson". The other W.C. Handy song on IMSLP, St. Louis Blues, is listed as a folk song.

While, strictly speaking, folk and blues are not really the same, this designation is at least closer than chanson.

Another possibility would be just plain "song" or "song (blues)", since the blues genre is a large one.

I realize chanson translates as song, but it has a connotation of Middle Ages/Renaissance, or at the very least, French Art Song.

I haven't changed anything, but I'm wondering what people think this genre should be.
