Date of composition field

This is beginning to seem not a minor problem or a one-off or restricted to a few people. I can only speak for myself here but am (inordinately(?)) annoyed by the habit of writing in the date of publication into the date of composition field when the latter information is not known, presumably so as to have something there.

(1) if one doesn't know, write nothing. (I'm guilty of writing in filler too. "by ..." isn't very useful information either...)
(2) this becomes particularly silly when the piece was published posthumously. think about it.
