Hummel Piano Sonatas

Post by kylegann »

Can someone tell me why Hummel has Piano Sonatas Nos. 7 and 8 here? Grove lists only six sonatas for Hummel:

Op. 2 No. 3 in C
Op. 13 in Eb
Op. 20 in f
Op. 38 in C
Op. 81 in f#
Op. 106 in D

Where did these two new ones come from? I wasn't under the impression that he had written anything recently. (joke)

Thanks,
Kyle Gann

From my understanding of looking at his complete work list, Piano Sonatas 7-9 were early works that were not given an opus number. Thus, they were written before the others, but given a number which comes after. Hope this clears up the confusion.

Well, I suspected as much (as with Beethoven), and would consider the confusion cleared were there any mention of early sonatas in Grove, but they're not even mentioned among the Woo works. I suppose not even Grove is perfect.
