Lieder Composed by Nietzsche: In US PD?

Post by samuel_kampa »

I am having difficulty finding lieder composed by Friedrich Nietzsche in print, and I would thus like to download the Nietzsche lieder which can be found on the corresponding IMSLP page. (I am performing Nietzsche lieder for a senior thesis at my home university.) However, I am a bit confused about whether or not Nietzsche's lieder are in the public domain in the United States. Obviously, Nietzsche died well before the 1920's, but the page I looked at (http://imslp.org/wiki/Junge_Fischerin_% ... iedrich%29) bears the notification "Non-PD US." Does this mean that Nietzsche's music is not in the public domain in the US, and if so, why would this be the case? Thanks for your help!

US status is hugely dependent upon date of first publication. While some of his songs were published not long after his death (a few even in his lifetime), others were not published until the Baerenreiter volume was issued in the 1970s. Items first published after 1922 are potentially under copyright in the USA.
