Unknown Death Dates

Post by VU Music Library »

I've added the composer/horn player Ignaz Böck to IMSLP in order to upload the score of a trio. I was able to provide a birth date, but not a death date, since the Library of Congress authority file only lists Böck's date of death as after 1815.

After adding the composer, I received the message that "all works by this person are still under copyright in Canada ...". I'm wondering, is that really the case, or, has it been assumed that Böck is still living and thus still under copyright because I was unable to provide a death date?

Thanks for your help!

With no death date the system assumed the composer was still living and so displayed that boilerplate message at the top of the category. I've input a floruit date for the year of this death and that has removed the copyright message. I should think that any works by this composer with the obvious exception of modern editions should be in the public domain.

Another trick to avoid this automated message is to put a question mark into the "Year Died=" field.
