Koussevitzky?

Post by modusvivendimedia »

Is it just me or did Koussevitzky's music just go into the public domain worldwide? He died June 4, 1951, which if I count correctly, is 70 years and one day ago. To clarify, I mean works by him that were published before 1926.

Well first off, the 70 year rule is for some countries. Others, including Canada where IMSLP is hosted, are 50. So if it's been 70 then it should have been PD as far as IMSLP is concered since the beginning. The 1926 publishing rule (or that is to say, 95 years ago) is for USA only, and death date doesn't matter, so all pre-1926 works have also been PD in the USA already.
That said, the way copyright works is you must wait until the next calendar year. So he'll become PD in the 70+ on Jan 1, 2022.

Thank you for the clarification regarding calendar year, that part I was unaware of!
