Haydn 36 Symphonies arr. Salomon

Post by Ozaru »

Today I started creating a new page, intending it to be a Collection with the Salomon arrangements of Haydn Symphonies. However, I've come to realize this will be a huge task, beyond the time & expertise that I have. I hope someone else can take it on, or at least start it off...?

I think they're all arranged for 5/6 instruments, viz. flute, 2 violins, viola and cello, with optional piano accompaniment. There are various scans at archive.org (e.g. https://archive.org/details/haydnssymphonies00hayd/), which seem to comprise 12 albums = 36 symphonies: firstly the London Symphonies (4 sets containing 93-104, but not in that order), then 4 sets with other symphonies (85, 83, 90; 92, 51, 91; 48, 64, 88; 82, 80, 73), then yet another 4 sets (symphonies 66, 69, 74; 44, 63, 75; 70, 41, 71; 47, 77, 53). They're all public domain, of course.

One of these albums is already partly present on IMSLP at https://imslp.org/wiki/Symphony_No.82_i ... Salomon.29 *but* this is only the piano accompaniment so not much use by itself, and it contains 3 symphonies (82, 80, 73 as shown above), so should really be on a separate Collection page with just a link from the Symphony 82 page.

As I see it, the task is something like:
- create new Collection pages (12, one for each album? or just one, for the whole 12 sets?)
- split the PDF(s) on archive.org into individual files for each album / part, tidy, and upload
- include links on each Collection page to the individual symphonies
- include links on each symphony's page, under Arrangements, to the respective Collection page

As I said, it's a big task, but it would be a significant contribution to the chamber music repertoire.
