How come I can't download anything ?

Post by Ancient Seagul »

Hi - hope someone can help me out here

I can't seem to download anything

I'm currently trying to download Caprice espagnol, Op.37 (Moszkowski, Moritz) but every time I try I get page cannot be displayed.

I've tried this with other composers - going back to Bach to see if its a copyright issue - but I can't even download a pdf of someone who's been dead 300 years!

I've used the website ages back and had no problems. Its only been in the last 2 weeks that I can't download a thing
I've tried clicking on "complete score" or the reference number of the score underneath. No matter what I do I can't DL a thing

Here's the site URL:
http://imslp.org/wiki/Caprice_espagnol% ... _Moritz%29
If I'm lucky it will let me reach the next page:
http://imslp.org/index.php?title=Specia ... s=id=06824

But then I get "page cannot be displayed" every time.

I'm UK-based

Anyone have any idea whats going on here?

Thanks

EDIT:

We have confirmed the issue appears to be owing to a routing problem from the UK. Using an ICMP traceroute to the server IMSLP.INFO can determine whether your computer is able to download files or not; the traceroute will appear to stop beyond one of the routers belonging to TELIA.NET. The majority of users who are affected are in the UK (however not all of the UK is blocked).

Hi C. Gull,

Short answer: try enabling cookies in your browser (this can be done for specific sites).

Long answer: the first time you attempt to download a score from IMSLP, you are redirected to a page that displays a copyright disclaimer as quoted below.
IMSLP makes no guarantee that the files provided for download on IMSLP are public domain in your country and assumes no legal responsibility or liability of any kind for their copyright status. Please obey the copyright laws of your country and consult the copyright statute itself or a qualified IP attorney to verify whether a certain file is in the public domain in your country or if downloading a copy constitutes fair use.
BY CLICKING ANY LINK ON THIS SITE INCLUDING THE LINK BELOW, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO THE ABOVE DISCLAIMER.
Please close this window or leave this site if you do not agree.

I accept this disclaimer, continue to download file
Once you've clicked the Accept link, a cookie is updated that says you've agreed to those conditions, and the page is redirected to allow the PDF to be downloaded:

Ah, you're using Internet Explorer. Try completely purging the cache, as suggested here:

http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/corrupted_downloads/
Persistence: “Clear the Cache and Try Again”
When you do suffer a download corrupted by Internet Explorer and you wish to retry it in the hope it will work the next time (or the time after that, or…), it is absolutely essential that you first clear the browser cache to get rid of the incomplete download. If you fail to do this, Internet Explorer will, while going through the motions to persuade you that it is downloading the file from the Web site, actually just copy the version saved in the cache, handing you another identically truncated copy. To clear the browser cache in Internet Explorer 6 (heaven knows where they'll hide it in future versions, all in the interest of improving your “browsing experience”), go to the “Tools” menu and select “Internet Options”, which will display a tabbed dialogue; choose the “General” tab. In the middle of this page is a section titled “Temporary Internet files”, which is Microsoftlish for what everybody else calls the browser cache. Click the “Delete Files” button, and when the squawk box pops up, confirm that you really, really want to discard these copies of pages you've viewed, including the truncated download. Click OK to close the “Internet Options” dialogue, and you're now ready to retry the download. Actually, after clearing the cache, I would quit and restart Internet Explorer in case it's got something squirrelled away in its pointed little mushy-brained head remembering the bad download, but this is probably just superstition. Still, it can't hurt.

The Solution: Use a Better Browser

By far, the wisest course for the intelligent Internaut is to abandon Microsoft Internet Explorer entirely, putting its multitudinous security holes, truncated downloads, cache pollution, and eccentric rendering of standards-compliant pages behind them and upgrade to a secure, compatible, and reliable browser such as:

* Mozilla Firefox
* Opera

both of which are free. You will still have to use Internet Explorer to run Windows Update, which relies on Explorer-only (and perilous) “ActiveX” components, but after a few hours getting used to it, you'll almost certainly find that one of the competently implemented browsers listed above will improve your Web experience in numerous ways in addition to solving the problem of corrupted downloads.

I've tried downloading some Chopin. Keep getting the same error. Very frustrating...

Hi

I have precisely the same problem - I have downloaded numerous scores in the last few weeks but for the last few days I cannot download anything. I use IE, but also tried FireFox and deleted all my cookies etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

There seems to be a number of such cases since June 14th. Please answer the following:

1) What country are you in?
2) What browser are you using?
3) Are you using any antivirus or firewall software, and if yes, which?
4) Do you use a router?

1. I'm in the UK
2. Currently using Mozilla Firefox (verson 3.011), having recently changed from IE6. Neither browser will allow me to get past the disclaimer screen
3. Windows Firewall is OFF. My antivirus software is AVG (free.avg.com)
4. I am wirelessly linked to my housemate's router. My housemate has been able to download pdf's, but I cant, which is wierd, because until a couple of weeks ago I could download anything no problem. Its only recently I can't download.

You are the second UK person to experience this problem. Incidentally you are also the second person whose location I know, so it would seem to be a UK-specific problem. And according to your story not all UK users have the problem, so it is most likely some transient issue in the routing between the server and the user.

If you know how to obtain a traceroute from your computer to IMSLP.INFO, please do so and post the results in this thread, as it will immediately show where the problem is (Google should also tell you how to do a traceroute). Otherwise, just wait a week, and if it doesn't fix itself, post again.

P.S. Do NOT use an online traceroute tool, as they are useless for our purposes. Use the one provided by Windows (again, Google will tell you how to use it, just search "traceroute windows").

Hi

I am from South Africa. I use IE 8 Beta and also tried the compality mode and Firefox
I run AVG and my windows firewall is off.
I have a router for a small home network - 4 computers.

AVG seems to be common denominator - will try to switch it off and see what happens.

Thanks

It seems like the Telia backbone border router either has bad routing information, or, more likely, the next router is down (a pity we do not know what that router is). Since the target server (216.47.112.4) is not offline, it is most likely a larger scale problem, especially considering that the last hop is in the EU and not the US (and will require several more hops in the US to get to the target server).

My advice is to wait a week and try again. If it still does not work, do another traceroute and post it here.

@Ancient Seagull: Can you ask your friend who can access IMSLP.INFO to do a traceroute and post it here too? That would be very helpful.

I checked with my friend - he can still manage to download PDF's successfully from the site. So then I asked him to perform a TRACERT IMSLP.INFO

He can't get beyond Telia [213.248.88.170] either. Just a bunch of timed outs after 10 or so iterations.
