work page for Prokofiev's Scherzo Humoristique

Post by steltz »

Much like the previous post, the instrumentation, and lack of an "arrangements" heading seems to indicate that the original was for 4 bassoons, but the file titles indicated that this work is "transcripted" for 4 bassoons, though the title page doesn't seem to indicate that at all.

As a woodwind player, I've always known of this piece but wondered about its genesis.

Does anyone know the history of this piece, and whether it is an arrangement?

The composition known as "Humoresque Scherzo" was written for 4 bassoons but was taken as No. 9 from the 10 piano pieces Op.12.

So the piano piece is the transcription?

No piece is technically a transcription. Both are original conceptions, but the Scherzo (Opus 12bis) was composed as an extraction from the 10 pieces for piano, Op.12 (number 9 in the set). Therefore both the Scherzo and the 10 pieces for piano should have separate work pages.

unknowing of this conversation, I had already moved the Op.12b to its own work page, because it was published separately.
