Violists on IMSLP

Post by Peter »

I just noticed that there are more users registered as violist than as violinist on IMSLP. Statistical issues put aside, I think this is very interesting, as there are more violinists than violists. This can only be because violists are more interested in what's on their music stand than violinists. A less cynical explanation could be that they're looking for scores more because the repertoire is so much smaller.

I used to play viola in 8th grade and college.

But I didn't know that made me smart.

I've heard that a viola is not really bigger than a violin - the violin just looks smaller because the violinist's head is so much bigger.

Is that true?

Now I'm wondering if that means that cellists are very small people.

Hmm. Violists are an interesting bunch. Perhaps that represents a chamber music (rather than orchestral) bias, where the ratios are closer. Perhaps violists have a more musicological bent. Perhaps they don't practice as much and have more time to upload scores.

No offense intended, but I always thought that violas are special because they use the alto clef exclusively.
