Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
Ligeti: Le Grand Macabre, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Fantastic work. My favorite contemporary opera (along with Glass's Akhnaten and Carter's What Next?; I despise Adams). I really love his music but the text is also great. Anyone able to see the NY Philharmonic's performance 2 weeks ago?

The Finale of Korngold's brilliant "Die Tote Stadt" with the incomparable James King as Paul. He ranks up there along with Wunderlich as my favorite tenor.

Wrong Order of Pages in La Boheme
In the full score scan of Puccini's La Boheme, starting at pg. 86 until pg. 111 of Act II, the music goes in reverse order. That is, rehearsal mark 30 on pg. 86 to 25 on pg. 108. If someone could please fix this, it would avoid any future confusion. Thanks.

And now I'm listening to the fantastic final movement of Korngold's Violin Concerto. Anne Sophie Mutter on violin.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
Mahler: Das Lie von der Erde. Otto Klemperer conducting, and the wonderful Fritz Wunderlich as soloist for "Das Trinklied von Jammer der Erde". The best recording of the work, with Christa Ludwig pulling off an epic "Der Abschied". Mahler this. Strauss that. :) For the re...

Re: Your Top 5 Favorite Pieces
Just checked my previous list, and I'm glad to see my musical taste hasn't really changed in around a year. :D Let's take another general look: 1. Wagner: Tristan und Isolde . My favorite by far, and I don't think this will change. Everything about it is just awesome. 2. Puccini: La Boheme . Once on...

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.
I don't often mind music being overdone if they're honestly very good pieces. For instance, Tchaikovsky's final three symphonies (especially the Fifth) are programmed by nearly every orchestra each year, but they are actually great pieces and I don't mind listening to them over and over. In my opini...

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.
The only piece by Mahler that I find overdone is his First Symphony, which is programmed by nearly every orchestra. I don't find it satisfying to listen to, and I feel it is one of his least inspired works. His Seventh and Adagio from No. 10 I find are not played enough, and they really are fantasti...

Re: Name Favorite Chord
Correct me if I'm wrong (having only seen the score once), but I believe the Pli selon pli chord contains all twelve notes, scorred for the bass instruments, as well as the percussion. I don't know about you guys, but in all seriousness my favorite chord is just a plain G7 with the added 6, spelled ...

Strauss Waltzes
I've noticed that Johann Strauss II is severely under-represented on this site and any full scores of waltzes or polkas would be great to have. If anyone has Fruhlingstimmen, Schneeglocken, Rosen aus dem suden, Geschnichten aus dem Wienerwald, or any others could you please upload them? Thanks.

Best Augmented Chords in Music
I was just listening to the Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung and as Valhalla goes up in flames there is a massive E-Flat augmented chord played by the full orchestra (pg. 610 of the full score). Even though it's played for just a moment, it is so powerful and when you hear it, you immidiately r...

Re: Recommendations for massive choirs
Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky cantata comes to mind, but you would need a good mezzo soloist for the sixth movement. Borodin's Polovetsian Dances would also work too.

Re: Pieces that Grow Louder, then Subside
First one that comes to mind is the first movement of Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta. The fugue reaches a climax when the theme is played in the seminal key of E-flat (the farthest note from the tonic A). After this development the music dies down and ends the way it began. Not ...
